HOLY HASS VIDEOS!!!!

Well apparently the sub situation in Manhattan Vibes needs some fixin. So far, Keith Carlock was OK, but he didn't have the latin or the jazz. He killed the groove stuff. I saw that gig, he got a bit lost in the 7. Antonio Sanchez killed the latin, but not the swing and definatly not the groove stuff. Right now Ernesto Simpson is doing the gig, but he can't play with loops, and his funk is weak.
I can't do it. I know that. Anyone? Send Hass an Email. He's touring so much that he can't do the gig. I get disappointed everytime he's not around with that band.

I won't be subbing for Hass anytime in this lifetime. Unless it's a casual.

I'd love to try. Those guys must be a blast to play with.

I don't understand why talking about Hass brings out the condescending attitude. I've let it slide to this point but lately it's getting out of hand.

Keep the snide remarks to yourself. I'd rather talk about Hass being great than about who you think isn't as good.

I agree Derek, but I'm not sure that you're reading all the posts. I always read every post before I say anything. There was a post about how some of the drummers in here would sound great playing in that situation. OK. Where?
There was another post about HASS actually needing subs for MV because past subs weren't cutting it. I'm just resonding to that. I'm not being negative, I'm saying let's hear it! It's very joyous really.

There are probably many great players in here, and I know for a fact that Manhattan Vibes pretty much sucks without Hass or someone that covers as much ground as Hass. It would be great if some unknown came in, and tore the gig up. I've seen them with many different subs, and they always lacked in an area, be it jazz, latin funk, or soloing. I was serious when I said if people in here think they're up for it, go to his site and drop him a line. He's nicest guy, you never know what can come out of it.

I still wouldn't do it. But it could be a great shot for young drummer who fits the bill.

Yeah! Hass is kickin' some ass on that stuff. Regarding his influences on an earlier post, I believe Hass studied with a great drumset, percussionist and South Indian specialist who teaches at Berklee and lives in NYC named Jamey Haddad. I remember seeing Hass around '97 soloing with Jamey's vibe, subdividing and regrouping rates into groupings of 2 and 3. Thanks for the clips.

He trades choruses with Chick on Humpty Dumpty, that's an 18-bar form divided 10-8, that's not your everyday standard form. Vinnie quotes the rhythm of the melody in one of his trades and he is answering Chick's ideas and developing them. Then later they trade sections! Chick on the 8 bar A section and Vinnie on the 10 bar B section. They trade choruses on Chasin' The Trane(12-bar), and If I remember correctly they trade 4's or 8's on Autumn Leaves and Tumba. Remember, Vinnie was trained as a jazz drummer he knows how to solo on a form.

Regarding his "swing" playing, he is very much influenced by Tony, Elvin and alot of Jack Dejohnette. Have you heard his other "jazz" recordings like on John Beasley and Bunny Brunel? He plays in a loose, broken style ala Roy and Jack on the Beasley CD. His brush playing on Falling Grace on the Brunel CD is sweet too. He also lays down some straight up swingin' time feels when appropriate. Vinnie is VERY MUCH AWARE of the jazz idiom.

Why is that Cindy Blackman, who was and is a "jazz drummer" before the Kravitz gig gets a free pass for sounding almost note for note like Tony but guys like Vinnie are called out as too Tony? Why is it alright for Billy Drummond or Eric Harland (Kenny Garrett, Stefon Harris) to have fusion influences in their playing? Branford Marsalis is quoted in Modern Drummer for saying that Tain does'nt even have a favorite jazz drummer. Even Tain says that some of his biggest influences were fusion guys like Narada Michael Walden(2nd Mahahavishnu) et al.

I think what makes Vinnie sound " fusiony" to some guys is the sound of his gear. If you put him on a cranked up round badge Gretsch with K istanbuls no one would hear the difference.
